Caring for the vulnerable mentally ill persons:

How can you HELP!!
The challenges of mental health problems are enormous and especially in nations of the world with inadequate, inequitable and inefficient health and social services. In most developing countries, including Nigeria, the absence of efficient social welfare services makes the family the only source of social support for the mentally ill, and affected families are abandoned to a life-time struggle with their ‘misfortune’ of mental illness and its associated physical, social and emotional burden, including poverty and stigmatization.

The available mental health services fall short of what can be considered as essential care, with 99% of mental healthcare expenses borne out of pocket by family members, in addition to the emotional and other social burden of severe mental disorders.

Unkempt or naked mentally-ill street wanderers (vagrants) - often as a result of “burnout” of overburdened family members, and the loss of all societal goodwill - are common sights in our communities. This is a reflection of the dismal state of our health and SOCIAL services. Who cares?

We Care:

The HoPe-CaRe Project (Homeless mentally ill Persons Care & Rehabilitation project) of Hope Restoration & Health Initiative Inc.; provides care, shelter, support, life-skill empowerment and community reintegration for homeless & vulnerable mentally ill persons.

Our purpose-built 16-bed recovery facility - "HOPE RESOURCE" is located at Klm 10, Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway, Aiyeloja, Abeokuta, from where residents attend their clinic follow-up, and begin their community reintegration journey.

Our corporate vision is to see "HOPE RESOURCE" or it's variants replicated in every major cities in Nigeria, providing shelter, support and livelihood empowerment for individuals with severe mental illness, and the needed relief and respites for overburdened family members to prevent incidence of homelessness due to severe mental disorders.
